YouTube Premium

Premium is YouTube’s ad-free plan. It removes ads across YouTube on any device where you sign in, and it includes background play, downloads and YouTube Music Premium.

In the US it costs $15.99 a month for one person, or $26.99 a month for a family plan of up to five people in your household.

YouTube Premium Lite

Premium Lite is a cheaper plan. YouTube says it lets you watch most videos ad-free, offline and in the background. Ads may still appear on music content, on Shorts and when you search or browse, and Lite does not include YouTube Music Premium.

In the US it costs $8.99 a month. Premium Lite is not offered in every country; YouTube’s help center lists where it is available.

Using an ad blocker in Chrome

On a computer, a Chrome extension can block YouTube ads without a subscription. BingeLift has eight separate YouTube controls, covering video ads, overlay ads, homepage banners, sponsored cards, search ads, sidebar ads, Shorts ads and merchandise shelves. All eight are on when you install it.

  1. Install BingeLift from the Chrome Web Store on your computer.
  2. Open youtube.com in Chrome. If YouTube was already open, refresh the page.
  3. Click BingeLift in Chrome’s toolbar to choose which YouTube ads to block.

YouTube says blocking its ads violates its Terms of Service, and that it may block playback if you keep using an ad blocker. If you see its warning, read what to do when YouTube says ad blockers are not allowed. See all eight YouTube controls for what each one hides.

On phones, tablets and TVs

Browser extensions only work in a browser on a computer. In the YouTube app on Android, iPhone, smart TVs or games consoles, YouTube Premium and Premium Lite are the supported ways to remove ads.

Which option should you choose?

  • You watch on a TV or phone: YouTube Premium, or Premium Lite if you mostly watch videos other than music and Shorts.
  • You also want YouTube Music without ads: YouTube Premium. Lite does not include it.
  • You mostly watch on a computer: a free ad blocker such as BingeLift, accepting that YouTube may show its warning.

Sponsorships that creators record inside their videos are part of the video, so neither YouTube’s plans nor ad blockers remove them.
